New Numbers, Old Story!

The number of women in Congress increased by 4% for a total of 23.7%...more than ever before! But how do we compare with the rest of the world?

USA still well under the 30 percent benchmark for participation by women! (56 countries have reached and surpassed that goal.)

12 Taxation without Representation States

Currently, there are 12 states that do not send any women to either House of the 116th Congress -- meaning that the women in those states are not represented and have NO VOICE in the body where our laws are made, even though they are the majority and pay taxes.

2018 Election Results: 12 states (24%)* still with no women in Congress! (116th Congress: 102 women in the House [+4 non-voting], 25 in the Senate = 23.7% total...a 4% increase.

Those states are: AR, ID, KY, LA, MD, MT, ND, RI, SC, SD, UT and VT...Four (4) states -- Alaska, Mississippi, Nebraska and Tennessee -- do not have any women members in the U.S. House of Representatives, but do have a woman in the U.S. Senate. (Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is the first woman from Mississippi to have been elected to either house of Congress!)

NOTE: When the ill-fated and dangerous debate on Social Security started in 2005, only 15% of the U.S. Congress was made up of women. And when healthcare was debated in 2009-10, only 16.8% of the seats were held by women...the number is now up to 23.7% but still not enough (see below).

QUESTION: How long will it take the U.S. to reach the minimum critical mass number of 30% advocated by the United Nations for the election of women to national legislatures?
